Patrick and Hayley are doing a combination of the K-1 unit. It is about animals and their homes. The focus has been on the guinea pigs. The students have looked at features like eyes and nose and explored what they eat. The students have done a comparison of what humans need to stay alive and what animals need. The difficulty is that it has been planned by the teacher and taught by the 2 LSAs. The teacher will have to assess by what is happening in the book. The teacher sits with Nicky who is Year 3 but it doing Year 2 content. Nicky, Gen and Brendan are looking at Water. They did a water walk around the school and took photos and talked about water and where it comes from.
In Griffin unit they have 5 different year levels which means 5 different levels.
The content and the activities need to be modified. The teacher does not feel that it needs any more modification that you would need in a mainstream class. The curriculum adaptation is supported by using lots of visuals and concrete materials.
A teacher commented that Griffin unit modifies more than mainstream. The LSUA teacher responded that modification are made daily and 'on the run'.
